It is rare that a Correspondence World Champion annotates a collection of the finest games from his career with detailed notes that penetrate deeply into the analytical and decision-making process. Grigory Sanakoev has been playing top-level correspondence chess for more than thirty years, culminating in his victory in the 12th Correspondence World Championship (1985-92), following high places in the 6th and 10th Championships. He is a chemist by profession and comes from Voronezh, in southern Russia.

In 1995 Sankoev published a selection of his best correspondence games named Tretia Popytka. In 1997 this attractive biography was translated into German as Der 3. Versuch and published by Schachverlag Kania. Now the English translation (by John Sugden) has seen the light of day.

Sanakoev is renowned for his aggressive opening repertoire, never shunning tactical complications and his games are a real pleasure to play over. By way of a footnote the editor of the English edition has included additions and amendments from the German editor Harald Keilhack and from the ubiquitous John Nunn. Together with several of his pupils Dvoretsky has also contributed through his book Attack and Defence.
